New Classics Discovered

Tuesday, April 19, 2005, 4:34PM

sophocles.jpgIn a juicy new development, a box of decaying papyrus fragments in Oxford are about to expose the world to new classics (an oxymoron, I know). Any guessing as to how long before the Los Angeles premiere of Sophocles' "Progeny" will be on at the Evidence Room?

The Independent of London covers the discovery well:

Now, in a breakthrough described as the classical equivalent of finding the holy grail, Oxford University scientists have employed infra-red technology to open up the hoard, known as the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, and with it the prospect that hundreds of lost Greek comedies, tragedies and epic poems will soon be revealed.

Any chance Aeschylus' "The Myrmidons" or (dare we hope?) Aristotle's book on comedy is there? I couldn't read the whole article, so I don't know if they have any details on the contents.
