A nice, warm taco

Tuesday, May 3, 2005, 3:30PM

taco3.jpgThere are a lot of great taco places in and around the 13th Council District. There is the local branch of Siete Mares, which makes a mean shrimp taco and Tacos Delta my favorite for carnitas and the carne asada tacos. A little further afield are the near-perfect fish tacos of Tacos Baja Ensenada.

These are all very good choices. But my personal favorite taco is a cochinita pibil taco from Yuca's, a great stand on Hillhurst between Franklin and Los Feliz. Owned and operated by the Herrera family, it is a great neighborhood institution. A cochinita pibil taco (one of about five or six choices at Yuca's) are all you need for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The marinated pork, with a little pool of warm grease and some minimal garnish, all wrapped in warm and forgiving tortillas, is simply put, a piece of perfection.

Well, it has just come out that Yuca's is a proud winner of a James Beard Award (the highest food honor in the country), specifically an America's Classics Award (see page 3 of the press release). Congratulations to Dora and the entire Herrera family for making LA proud!
